Frequently asked questions

Tax questions shouldn't require another tax return to understand.

Here are straightforward answers to common questions about working with Black Swan Tax Group in Vero Beach and throughout the Treasure Coast.

Pricing & services

Before you get started.

How much does tax preparation cost?

Our Essential package starts at $250, Plus starts at $350, and Self-Employed preparation starts at $450. Final pricing depends on the complexity of your return. We confirm your preparation fee before substantial work begins.

Do you charge more for an in-person appointment?

No. Your preparation fee is based on the complexity of your return, not whether you prefer secure online service or an in-person appointment.

What can increase my preparation fee?

Examples include rental properties, additional states, substantial investment or cryptocurrency activity, multiple businesses, complex K-1s, prior-year filings, amendments, extensive bookkeeping cleanup and other unusual tax situations.

Online & in person

Choose how you want to work with us.

Can I file completely online?

Yes. Most clients can complete preliminary intake, securely submit documents, communicate with us, review the completed return and complete required signatures remotely.

Do you offer in-person tax preparation in Vero Beach?

Yes. Black Swan offers scheduled in-person appointments in the Vero Beach area for clients who prefer face-to-face service. Appointments are arranged in advance.

Where do I upload my tax documents?

Sensitive tax documents are submitted through our secure client portal after your engagement is accepted. Do not send Social Security numbers, IDs, W-2s or banking information through the public website form.

Your return

Documents, timing and tax situations.

What documents should I bring or upload?

Common documents include photo identification, W-2s, 1099s, Social Security statements, retirement distributions, investment statements and records supporting applicable deductions or credits. Self-employed clients should also gather business income and categorized expense records.

How long will my return take?

Turnaround depends on complexity, document completeness and seasonal workload. We do not promise an arbitrary same-day turnaround. Complete and organized information helps us prepare your return more efficiently.

What if I'm missing a tax document?

Tell us. We would rather identify what is missing and help determine the appropriate next step than guess or prepare an incomplete return.

Who we serve

Common return types.

Do you prepare 1099 and self-employed returns?

Yes. Our Self-Employed package is designed for independent contractors, side-hustle earners and sole proprietors who report business activity on Schedule C. Pricing starts at $450 and increases with complexity.

Do you prepare returns for retirees?

Yes. We prepare returns involving Social Security, pensions, retirement distributions and other common retirement income. Being retired does not automatically make a return more expensive—a straightforward retirement return may qualify for Essential pricing.

Do you prepare prior-year returns or amendments?

Potentially. Prior-year and amended returns are reviewed individually before we accept the engagement and quote the preparation fee.

Refunds & filing

What happens after preparation?

Do you guarantee a refund?

No. A tax preparer cannot legitimately guarantee that every taxpayer will receive a refund or promise a particular refund amount before the return is prepared. Your result depends on your individual tax situation and applicable tax law.

How will I know what I'm filing?

You have an opportunity to review your completed return before filing and complete the required authorization and signature process.

What happens after you e-file my return?

We monitor the electronic filing acknowledgement to determine whether the return was accepted or rejected. An IRS acceptance means the electronic return was received; it is not a guarantee of a particular refund date.

Security

How do you handle sensitive information?

Our public website is intentionally separated from the system used for sensitive tax documents. The preliminary intake form collects only basic information. Tax documents and sensitive taxpayer information are handled through the secure client workflow established for your engagement.
